"Hunger strike and protests over Israeli settler killing of Palestinian activist in West Bank" [9:02 min]
by Al Jazeera English

youtube.com/watch?v=dOBdIITt4y

Quote by AJE:
"Aug 4, 2025
Sixty Palestinian women in the occupied West Bank are on hunger strike, demanding Israel return the body of Awdah Hathaleen.
The Palestinian activist, who worked on the Oscar-winning film “No Other Land”, was shot dead by an Israeli settler last week.
The settler has been released after a brief period under house arrest, while eight Palestinians from Hathaleen's village remain in detention.
Al Jazeera’s Nida Ibrahim reports.

Dozens of Israeli and international activists have marched through West Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, calling for the release of Awdah Hathaleen's body.
They also demanded freedom for village residents detained in recent Israeli military operations.
Four people were arrested during the march.
Fathi Nimer is a Palestine Policy Fellow at the think-tank Al-Shabaka.
He said Palestinians are experiencing systemic violence by Israeli settlers, with many being arrested for defending their homes while the settlers face no consequences."

Gaza Freedom Flotilla crew pledge hunger strike if captured by Israel

youtube.com/watch?v=Ij189hKIPz

Jacob called any attempt to intercept their group en route to Gaza “criminal,” referencing Greta Thunberg’s detention as “a kidnapping.” He said the 21 international activists have agreed to a hunger and water strike if detained and vowed not to cooperate with Israeli authorities, adding our governments will have no choice but to intervene…

There is no rule of law in Hungary! Maja, a non-binary person who was abducted from Germany to Hungary, has been on hunger strike for over a month.

Instead of releasing Maja from custody, it is now being considered to insert a pacemaker into Maja in order to be able to continue the show trial! Act at last, Commission President von der Leyen!

Bring Maja back!

France: Turkish Revolutionary Zehra Kurtay on Indefinite Hunger Strike Against the Risk of Deportation

Zehra Kurtay is a Turkish journalist and revolutionary who has lived in France since 2007. Recently placed in an Administrative Detention Center and then released, she is now under an OQTF (Obligation to Leave French Territory) and risks deportation at any time even if the threat of extradition to Turkey has been averted thanks to the mobilization (see this article). On Thursday, July 3, she decided to go on an indefinite hunger strike to defend her right to political asylum in France.

In order to support her, her supporters are calling for a large mobilization by organizing a 24-hour solidarity tent at Porte de Saint-Denis in Paris (boulevard Saint-Denis, 75010 Paris) which will be inaugurated at a press conference this Thursday, July 3 at 6 p.m. At the same time, about fifteen organizations in France have published a statement of support calling for its regularization (see here).

#PortlandME #protesters arrested after blocking traffic to call for end of #Israel-#Gaza war

Maine Public | By Patty Wight
Published May 21, 2025

"Portland police arrested more than a dozen [18, I heard] #activists Wednesday afternoon as they staged a so-called '#DieIn' to protest the ongoing war in Gaza and the lack of #HumanitarianAid for #Palestinians.

"The demonstrators were part of a larger group that blocked a four-way intersection on Commercial Street for roughly an hour. #KristenSalvatore was among those arrested after refusing to leave the street despite several warnings from police.

" 'Well nothing else seems to be working. We have to draw attention to this issue. People are going about their lives as if nothing is happening, as if their taxes aren't paying to blow up children and destroy Gaza,' Salvatore said.

"Abby Fuller of the #MaineCoalitionForPalestine said the effort is intended '#DisruptBusinessAs Usual.'

" 'To make sure that powerful people who can make a difference and change policies know that we are not willing to let business go on as usual. And we plan on staying in the street as long as we can and up until arrest,' she said.

"On Thursday, more than a dozen #Mainers will go on a 40-day #HungerStrike. They hope it will keep attention on Gaza and lead to congressional action.

"This week, leaders from the U.K., France and Canada issued a joint statement calling on the Israeli government to end its military operations in Gaza."

Today in Labor History May 5, 1981: Bobby Sands (1954-1981) died, ending his 66-day hunger strike. Sands was an Irish political prisoner and member of Parliament who had been locked up in the notoriously brutal Maze Prison near Belfast. The strike was an attempt to get the British government to grant political prisoner status to Nationalist inmates, rather than treating them as common criminals.

Whom It May Concern

Subject: Formal Declaration of Fast Death Strike – Phillipiada Refugee Camp (April 9, 2025)

I hereby formally declare that as of April 9, 2025, I have commenced a fast death strike in the form of a death fast at the location referred to as the refugee camp in Phillipiada, Arta. I will not accept any medical or nutritional interventions intended to sustain life.

Reason for the Fast Death Strike:

Having survived decades of torture under the Turkish state, I sought protection under the asylum rights granted by the United Nations and applied for asylum in Greece.

Since I have close family members and acquaintances residing in Northern Europe, I requested permission to transit to one of those countries.

However, for the past 22 months:

I have been subjected to various dehumanizing and isolating practices.

My sense of orientation has been deeply affected; I no longer have a clear understanding of where I am. Other than the use of an Android phone (whose authenticity I cannot even confirm), I have been deprived of all means to contact my relatives and friends.

For 22 months, I have lived in a state of uncertainty and mental dislocation, repeatedly asking myself, “Where am I?”

My asylum application has been pending for 22 months without resolution, and no timeline or justification has been provided.
Therefore, I respectfully request the following:

A. A clear and transparent explanation, in a language I can understand, regarding the reasons for the prolonged and unequal handling of my asylum procedure.

B. That my asylum application be reviewed by an impartial commission, under the supervision of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

C. That I be granted a travel permit allowing me to transfer to a Northern European country where I have established family and social connections.

Note: If there are any doubts concerning the legitimacy of this hunger strike—which involves only the consumption of water and coffee—I am open to undergoing a medical examination.

Sincerely,

Mesut Aydin

Today in Labor History March 31, 1927: Birth of Cesar Chavez. In 1965, Chavez led farm workers in California on their first grape boycott. The nationwide protest lasted five years and ended with the first union contract for U.S. farm workers outside of Hawaii. In 1966, Chavez’s organization officially became the United Farm Workers. Chavez was inspired by the nonviolent civil disobedience of Gandhi. In addition to strikes, boycotts and pickets, he was famous for going on hunger strikes. Later he became infatuated with the religious cult, Synanon. He used Synanon’s “game” to punish union members and enforce conformity. Chavez also supported the brutal Filipino dictator Ferdinand Marcos. This alienated Filipino members of the union, as well as many of the religious organizations that had supported the UFW.

Today in Labor History March 1, 1981: Provisional Irish Republican Army member Bobby Sands began his hunger strike at HM Prison Maze. He was in prison for his role in the Balmoral Furniture Company bombing in 1976. During the hunger strike, he was elected to parliament. 10 prisoners died from starvation during the strike, including Sands. 100,000 people attended his funeral.

#Fawad Chobin informed the family members of the plaintiffs, #Ruhullah Khosravi, #Ramin Mohammadi, #Ashkan Mohammadi, #Farshid Kazemi, #Maziar Nkoui, #Reza Karimnejad and #Homan Almasi, of the detainees of the revolutionary uprising, in protest of the indecisive situation in the Shiban prison of #Ahvaz, on the eighth day of the hunger strike. They are on dry hunger strike which is extremely lethal.
