Survival of the newest: The #mammals that survive #MassExtinctions aren't as 'boring' as scientists thought phys.org/news/2023-10-survival

Derived #faunivores are the forerunners of major #synapsid radiations nature.com/articles/s41559-023

"the species that survived aren't as generic as #scientists had thought: instead, having new and different traits can be the key to succeeding in the aftermath of a catastrophe."

A 104-Ma record of deep-sea irregular #echinoids – a story of persistence, food availability and a big bang journals.plos.org/plosone/arti

"ecosystems of the deep sea have emerged again and again after multiple #MassExtinctions... But there is increasing evidence that parts are much older. A team has now provided the first #fossil evidence for a stable colonization of the deep sea floor by #invertebrates for at least 104 million years."

Introduction

I am a lover of #palaeontology (but I'm not professional or even formally educated) particularly interested in all things #dinosaurs, early #evolution & mass extinctions. My favourite dinosaur is Giraffatitan

I am also interested in mental health due to my own lived experience of bipolar 1. I am also autistic. Both have a big impact on me so I do talk about them a lot.

Massive animal lover. Favourite animal is the pangolin. At home I have rabbits & guinea pigs who I love to talk about. But I love most animals so always happy to see & talk about any of them

Musician trained as a viola player, I also play tuba/e flat bass in a brass band. I haven't played viola or violin properly in years but I do want to get back to that.

Qualified nail technician, but not really here for that.

The #evolution of tree #roots may have driven #MassExtinctions phys.org/news/2022-11-evolutio

Enhanced terrestrial nutrient release during the #Devonian emergence and expansion of #forests pubs.geoscienceworld.org/gsa/g

Evolution of #tree roots likely flooded past #oceans with excess nutrients, causing massive #algae growth. These rapid and destructive #AlgaeBlooms would have depleted most of the oceans' #oxygen, triggering catastrophic mass #extinction events.
