This report is a couple of years old, but still good info, esp given the low probability that high-quality data will be available from any govt agency for the foreseeable future. I particularly like the chart at the bottom of the page -- handy reference while shopping.

"remember that 4 ounces is the amount in a 5-ounce can of tuna; the remaining ounce is water or oil."
I feel kinda dumb, but I didn't realize this. I thought that was the drained weight. (btw, I'm old enough to remember when cans of tuna were 6 oz -- maybe 6.5?)

And the wording of this was just, so, duh: "This disparity in mercury pollution in different parts of the world suggests a possible solution, says [Harvard professor]. The more we reduce mercury emissions into the atmosphere, the more we can reduce mercury contamination in the oceans."

Consumer Reports · How Worried Should You Be About Mercury in Your Tuna?By Lauren Kirchner

So yeah. Someone here asked me for advice on something that they suspected was Lyme Disease, but was blown off as "poison ivy" by a physician. After looking at photos of what I recognized as a Lyme circle and asking about specific symptoms, I suggested they consult another physician and get a test. It turns out that Lyme was an issue. When in doubt, don't mess around! Physicians today are encouraged for quantity not quality and might miss symptoms! Advocate for your own health!

#Tick risks vary by region. Here's where diseases have spread and how to stay safe

June 23, 2025

"There are early signs that it could be a bad year for tick bites. In May, the rate of people seeking emergency care for tick bites was the highest it's been since 2019, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"If you get a tick bite, you're not alone: They happen in every U.S. state, and some 31 million people get tick bites each year.

"Not every tick bite yields disease, since not every tick carries pathogens or bites long enough to transmit them. Still, most reported cases of vector-borne disease (including mosquitoes) come from ticks, which can carry pathogens with terrible consequences.

"Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in the U.S., estimated to affect more than 470,000 people each year.

" 'But ticks can actually expose people in the U.S. to more than a dozen different disease-causing agents,' including #toxins, #allergens, #bacteria, #parasites and #viruses, says Alison Hinckley, an epidemiologist at the CDC's Division of Vector-Borne Diseases. 'The illnesses can range from mild to life-threatening,' Hinckley adds.

"Here are facts to know about these biting critters and tips to stay safe.

"Ticks are slow threats, so prompt action cuts your risk

"With ticks — unlike mosquitoes with their one-and-done sting — there are generally multiple opportunities to reduce your risks. That's because most kinds of ticks need to crawl onto your body, latch into the skin and, in many cases, feed for a while — from several hours to several days — before they get you sick."

"Lets face it, there is no escaping the petrochemical fallout. There are very few, if any, closed systems. I'm sure, with the proper testing, we can find trace amounts of incredibly toxic hydrocarbons throughout our environment.

Instead of focusing on the problem, we should focus on solutions, especially in our gardens. Fortunately, there are some ways to mediate the effects of potentially toxic chemicals. Companion planting with saprophytic fungi will increase hydrocarbon degradation rapidly, as these organisms have the exoenzymes capable of long-carbon-chain cleavage. One can also research bio-chelation, or using organisms to bind potentially toxic metals.

In my garden, I tend to not worry so much about these issues. Though, I strive for biodiversity and permaculture more than monocrop agriculture. I think the key is to have many organisms that are capable of remediation. Its also useful to be mindful of plants that can potentially hyper-accumulate unwanted metals and compounds."

Hoping to find more info about toxins and petrochemicals like this. Solutions instead of futile prevention.

Ocean temperatures are heating up
The marine environment is turning into a dead zone
And fossil fuel projects are still fast tracked

"The wetlands had degraded over a long period of time, with barrages (structures that control water flow) added in the 1950s, higher nutrient loads and extended periods of reduced flow from the Murray... The recent drought and unusual algal blooms had been “eye openers” to many people."

A striking clash is playing out between the Make America Healthy Again movement and anti-regulation Republicans. An MAHA report released Thursday blamed environmental toxins for health problems but did not make recommendations. #MAHA #Toxins #environment

#environmental #toxins:

- #PFAS, "forever chemicals" that wont break down in the environment, they just sit there and accumulate and we still have no idea what the hell they are doing to the environment.

- alcohols of all sorts used to keep the manufacturing process clean as even tiny amounts of contamination can fuck up entire batches.

Climate Change Impacts on Toxins and Health Effects by Amal Saad-Hussein et al, 2025

This book covers the impact of global warming on environmental toxins, occupational toxins, food toxins, marine toxins and agricultural toxins. It discusses the current knowledge on the environmental and health effects of these toxins, and how these toxins could be aggravated through global warming and the worsening environmental conditions.

“You really want to know: ‘What’s in the air, what’s in the water, what’s in the ash that blew into my kitchen cabinet? Do I let my dog outside?’” she said. “All these questions were coming up and we thought, ‘We really need to serve the community.’” Indeed, while the initial findings will be focused on firefighters’ exposure, the team is also looking into residents’ exposure to heavy metals and chemicals.

Weekend #Plankton #Factoid 🦠🦐
Late summer is when you may see floating scums of bright green on the surface of lakes when winds are calm, often described as spilled oil paint. These could be a range of #algae but are usually #cyanobacteria. Some of these have protein lined gas vesicles to help mediate buoyancy but can overshoot during photosynthesis and get stuck in surface tension. Don't touch these scums (or get them on your dog) because they can contain #toxins. #HABs #ClimateChange #Science
