I'm having terrible difficulty getting a variety of apps on my Android phone to play custom notification sounds from wav or mp3 files. I can choose the relevant files as notifications sounds in the apps' internal settings menus, but I get either silence or the default notification sound when there's a notification. The files play successfully in my music player app. Anyone have any advice, please?

I updated to the latest version of “Ice Cubes”, the Mastodon client. Now I’m not getting notified of posts in my notifications section. I went a day without a single notification, and thought it was really strange. I went into the app, and found long conversations that I had completely missed out on.
