Success of #peacekeeping forces in Ukraine hinges on #deterrence
Stronger #defense, including #nuclear #deterrence and forward-deployed forces, is Europe’s best chance to deter #Russia and defend #Ukraine from further #attacks.

The #War against #Ukraine must end with Kiyv winning, and I don't just mean #StatusQuoAnteBellum (1994-2011), but full #EU & #NATO membership with stationed #troops and #nukes.
#Poland, #Lithuania signal openness to #French #nuclear #deterrence for Europe
Macron proposed to start “strategic discussions” on the subject as he warned #Europe against the #Russian #threats & stressed #European countries should no longer rely on US for security

EUpol, RUpol, NATO,
I believe Canada needs to develop an effective #deterrence #threat to keep Mango Mussolini at bay - but we need it, like, yesterday.
Nuclear weapons - possibly purchased from France, since the USA might have too much influence over the UK - would do the trick. We wouldn't need a lot, just enough to make a couple getting through to D.C. and New York a realistic possibility.
It shocks me to have to seriously consider this threat. Canada hasn't seriously worried about a US #invasion since the '50s or '60s.

Ukraine’s potential reasons for seeking nuclear deterrence
#Budapest #Memorandum has come under fire because Russia openly violated it by invading Ukraine, & US & UK failed to guarantee Ukraine’s security
Calls for Ukraine to acquire #nuclear #weapons are direct consequence of Russia’s war & #NuclearThreats
It's become obvious earlier nuclear weapons were used as a tool of #deterrence, but now it’s an offensive tool

Ukraine Daily Summary - Thursday, November 7 2024
Russia has executed at least 124 Ukrainian POWs on battlefield -- Ukraine's potential reasons for seeking nuclear deterrence -- Europe must take responsibility for its security, Polish FM says after Trump's win -- Russian drone attack on Kyiv damages residential areas & buildings, causes fires in 5 districts -- and moreBut anyway, I've never seen a (reckless) attack on an enemy bringing the amount of #deterrence as the recent #PagerAttack on #Hizbollah.
But can it work in a region of #revenge and counter-revenge and counter-counter-revenge (and so on) ?
No retaliation to @israel assassinations in foreign countries:
An Arab diplomat from the Gulf said: “@iran desperately wants an off-ramp”.
An expert said: “The fact is that very significant figures in Iran have argued against responding. By their narrative, Netanyahu wants to burn the region down and pull the US into a wider war. Why should Iran fall into the trap?”

Do you really want to know why #Germany, in spite of having >40M illegal guns in circulation isn't boiling or experiencing even a fraction of #violence the #USA does even when adjusted per capita and #guns?
I think #JStark was right in terms of "#Deterrence" as a means to discourage bad actors.
OFC I wish for a peaceful world where no arms are needed, but sadly forcing the masses to be disarmed only makes them weak to opression by [non-] state actors and dependent on [de-facto] state actors for their protection.
I refuse to violate the rules and laws despite disagreeing with them as a matter of principle: It's harder to advocate for change or be taken seriously as a convict - even in the case of a victimless crime...
…#Biden says he remains committed to Ukrainian victory. Asked about the #war’s endgame, Biden says, “#Peace looks like making sure #Russia never, never, never, never occupies #Ukraine.”
…even longtime critics are impressed w/Biden’s efforts in Ukraine.
…Biden says his response has been part of a broader #deterrence strategy. “If we ever let Ukraine go down, mark my words, you’ll see #Poland go, & you’ll see all those nations along the actual border of Russia [fall].”
“Levy describes a system that has almost reached perfection. The political echelon wants to maintain the status quo, and the military provides it with legitimacy in exchange for funds and status.”
“Levy points out the gradual withdrawal of the old Ashkenazi middle class from the ranks of the combat forces[…]:
• the military’s complete reliance on technology as a decisive factor in warfare;
• the adoption of the concept […] of an army that is “small and lethal”;
• the obsession with the idea of #deterrence, which is supposed to negate the other side’s will to fight; and
• the complete addiction to the status quo as the only possible and desirable state of affairs.”

U.S. officials described the operation as a carefully calibrated #military response aimed at deterring further attacks on #UnitedStates interests in the region while avoiding ramping up the cycle of regional conflict.
“The #Biden administration is trying very much to strike a balance between #deterrence & de-escalation,” said Abdolrasool Divsallar, an #Iran specialist at the Middle East Institute. “I think the balance is there.”
The #USA isn't strinking targets for #deterrence. Like never.
Their presence somewhere is supposed to be deterring enough.
But once they strike, they're always in for the kill. No matter the nice words.
#Houthis in #Yemen don't seem to know what deterrence means anyway.
