#Matrix bzw.

Run your own Matrix Homeserver?

@thesismum Be aware that #Threema doesn’t have post quantum encryption. Legislation in Switzerland might not be that great in the future either: https://lenews.ch/2025/07/25/proton-freezes-swiss-investment-over-surveillance-fears/
Next, telecom data retention in the EU is about to change too (https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=celex:52025DC0349 if i am not mistaking), so poor encryption means access to data. Especially when quantum computing comes in play.
So for now I rather advice #Signal, but I am on #Element / #Matrix too.
Merci @sebsauvage.

> The platform is cumbersome for newcomers and lacks user-facing features that people actually want, while simultaneously overexposing complex settings like roles, permissions, and addresses. Even overloaded platforms like Discord ultimately focus on what users want: Dumb emojis and stickers, silly color themes, and intuitive server and friend management. Matrix, by contrast, feels like it was built for compliance departments and bureaucrats, not communities.
> European governments in particular seem willing to endure all sorts of digital torture if it means reducing dependency on U.S. big tech. After all, their institutions which have failed over and over to develop own solutions, and that just “recently” (in relative terms) migrated off Windows XP and Internet Explorer, yet continue to use Lotus Notes and fax machines, are unlikely to be deterred by sluggish UIs or bizarre permission bugs.
> Between the slow performance, the increasing amount of spam, the miserable web client, and the unfinished state of Element X, the Matrix.org network is not something I am willing to continue to recommend, especially to non-technical users. Normal people are simply tolerating it to communicate with idealistic nerds like myself who insist(ed) on using it.

> The Matrix.org network has great potential, but after years of dealing with glitches, slow performance, poor UX, and one too many failures, I’m done with it.

We've been using #Element / #Matrix in production in our company for 7 years now, maintain secondary emergency channel on #Signal.
Element is not perfect, has some questionable UX calls, some moments of "Why on earth would anyone..." - but truth is, I have far more such moments with #Slack and Element works "well enough."
Also know #Teams from some customers... and yeah, it's also really not great.

@daniel What frustrates me the most about #Matrix is that Vector clusterfucked the client situation themselves. Having a de facto default, "go-to" Matrix client with feature parity across all platforms was one of the biggest strengths. Now we have feature split between two official clients. And the one they promote these days is still an unfinished beta. It is absolutely mindboggling how you can screw up this bad.
I tested it. I created another user on my server and was able to chat with myself. I also created a user on matrix.org to check federation and was also able to chat to myself. Nice!
