A total change of pace from Nina Simone for last spin of the night.

This was a random dart throw from a clearance bin a few years ago, and to be honest, I STILL don’t know how I feel about it.
However, I keep re-visiting it, as there’s just something about it that keeps me coming back each time.

This is one of those bands/recordings that people like to invent goofy labels/genres for.
#MathRock post-this-or-that #Hardcore nerd #prog #punk …whatever. I don’t know what to call it.

Regardless… interesting rock music from Tacoma, Washington.

Self-Titled Summer | Aucan (2008, Italy)

Our next Self-Titled Summer spotlight is on number 44 on The List, submitted by mbr. This is the debut album from the multi-disciplinary collective/trio of Dario Dassenno, Francesco D’Abbraccio, and Giovanni Ferligna. While the releases that follow really amp up the electronic elements, stepping into the world of IDM, dark techno, and dub step with what will become an impressive set of synths and other gear, this album showcases their math/post rock origins. Not to be confused with Aucán, the Argentinian prog folk band from the 70s who also have a (rather charming) self-titled album.

Self-Titled Summer | Animals As Leaders (2009, US)

Next in our new Self-Titled Summer series is number 472 on The List, submitted by Chip_Unicorn. This is the debut album from the Washington D.C.-based band when it was still the solo project of guitarist Tosin Abasi. As Chip_Unicorn noted when sending in this submission, this instrumental prog metal album is full of complex but fun songs that play hard with time signatures and very fast guitar work.

New #review today: "After several years of inactivity, Seattle #MathRock band #Nosretep resurfaced in 2025 with shows around town and this new album, more than eight years after their debut. Calling them math-rock only captures part of their sound. The majority of their music is certainly in odd meters, but you also have to take into account a kind of Led Zeppelin orientation to the riffs along with the use of sound effects and samples." #ExposeOnline #ProgressiveRock expose.org/index.php/articles/

Ever since I heard Uh-Oh by The Subliminals the other day it's been a total earworm. Now I'm #listening the album it comes from, United State, released in 2000;

This has aged very well IMHO. Equal parts 3Ds-esque psychedelic rock, and HDU style mathrock, it's upbeat but unapologetically quirky. Great fun. Totally recommended.

#HatTip to Freak the Sheep on #95bFM for reminding me they exist.

Hey whoever suggested this album when I asked for 1994 album recommendations, good call! I can barely find anything on this San Diego band, so I'd call this a hidden gem. :ablobjam:

It is objectively really funny that Billy Corgan collected two of the best guitarists of the broad post-hardcore scene from iconic post-rock/math rock bands like Slint and Chavez, and then just had them to do the goofy (but often enjoyable) shit Zwan was up to.
