Currently, it appears to be at the stage where Niantic has had dreams of monetisation, put up a "For Sale" sign, spaffed a bunch of AI hype on their website, and baited a trap to get the gullible with a bunch of techy sounding keywords such AI and Augmented Reality (see attached screenshot).
Will it cost a lot of money? Yes.
Will it burn a lot of electricity and cause a lot of pollution? Yes.
Will it amount to anything useful?
No, I don't think so.
