A #Belgian thingy?

Until 2016 publication of these photos would have been illegal. From the website of the #Atomium (pictured here:)
‘#copyright restrictions exempt private individuals (…) where photographs are taken by private individuals and shown on private websites for no commercial purpose.’

SABAM, #Belgium's society for collecting copyrights and having an illustrious reputation for claiming copyrights (even when it’s not even holding it,) has claimed worldwide intellectual property rights on all reproductions of the Atomium and has gone so far to demand a US website to remove all images from its pages.

Luckily Belgium has come to its senses and since 2016 there is freedom of panorama, allowing pictures of public buildings under copyright to be legally distributed.

All three images are details of the Atomium: 9 gigantic (18m diameter) Stainless steel clad spheres joined together with steel tubes (which hold the escalators and elevators) shaped together in unit cell that represent an iron crystal, magnified 165 million times.

We should never forget…

A site with a dark and sinister memory. On the place where #Dutroux had his house and held several minors. The house is long demolished and a #memorial has been put in place. Only the cellar where #Julie Lejeune and #Mélissa Russo have been held for several years still exist.

Low white wall that follows the lines of where the corner house of Dutroux stood. Behind it a lush garden. The walls that borders the houses on both sides are also whit. A flying bird is painted on the far wall. A commemorative wreath is places on the left just under a hall in the small wall where a flame is burning. The atmosphere that the photo exhibits mimics that of the place.

This gas station in Nelson Ghost Town appeared briefly in "3000 Miles to Graceland" with Kevin Costner. Here, it's lit up rather strangely at night. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light capable of producing different colors, and illuminated the scene. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting." Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light, not paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than AI-generated images. This was photographed while Tim Little and I were teaching a night photography workshop at Nelson Ghost Town in Nevada and Goffs, CA, along Route 66.

Time.

Back then, cities were not synchonized, ie. the time between cities could vary several minutes since they often followed the ‘sun time.’ With the advent of the train that could no longer be the case and regions and countries introduced a universal time.

Clocks became very important and if you wanted to know the exact time, you went to the train station.

Plus à droite on arrive sur un pâturage tourmenté de reliefs arrondis laissés par le retrait d'un glacier peut-être récent. Au bout de ce pâturage se trouve un petit lac niché au creux d'une formation rocheuse en forme d'écaille. A droite derrière cette écaille il semble y avoir une rupture de pente brutale, on voit au loin un pâturage aussi tourmenté, et éclairé par le soleil. La Reine de la Vanoise siégeait comme chaque matin sur son trône, afin de superviser le lever du jour. Et comme chaque matin, ses sujets s'agenouillaient devant Sa Magnificence, quitte à se vautrer dans l'eau. On ne refusait rien à sa Reine.
