The prompt is #Opportunity

“Seize The Day” by Wax Tailor Feat. Charlotte Savary from “Paris (La Bande Originale Du Film de Cédric Klapisch)”, 2008

I went conceptual this time, looking for something with #CarpeDiem spirit and rediscovered this stirring #downtempo track from a French film I’ve never seen, with tracks of varying types/tempos of groove mostly from French artists I’m not familiar with, plus one track each by #RosemaryClooney, #QuincyJones, and #WilsonPickett.

It all fits together more cohesively than it might sound and makes a compelling argument for tracking down the film, but this track, which for all its treated vocals and sampled snippets maintains a very organic feel, is for me the highlight. The video using #StopMotionAnimation with cutout figures is a small masterpiece too and fits the #collage-like construction of the track.

International Animation Unions Plan Protest Against AI at Annecy Festival: ‘Generative Al Do Not Support Artists, It Destroys Them’
variety.com/2025/film/global/a

Annecy Festival is as important as the Oscars for the world of animation. Annecy is where you find the best new art in the medium, and can also spot innovations and trends. Excellent to see this coordinated statement from unions and artists at Annecy Festival about the value of art and artists, and the negative effects we're seeing emerging from LLMs.

Variety · International Animators Plan Protest Against AI at Annecy FestivalBy Jamie Lang

Phil Tippett ("You had one job!") being interviewed about major influences, such as learning from Ray Harryhausen, that shaped his career of creating stop-motion animation for feature films:

'I took LSD when I was working on "Return of the Jedi". I could communicate with my cat, Brian, and Brian took me on a journey. I crawled into this cupboard with Brian the cat, and we went to the centre of the Earth for like three billion years. And it was just in this world of molecules and it was fine. It was like very calming. And so I decided to go back to work. And so I was at ILM, and I walked into like the the blue-screen stage and it's like this huuuuge -- everything just just super-illuminated bright blue and I was just like, "Ah, I took like way too much!"'

Guillermo Del Toro And Henry Selick Speak Out On Stop Motion Vs CGI/AI

"AI has demonstrated that it can do semi-compelling screensavers! Essentially the value of art is not how much it costs and how little effort it requires but how much would you risk to be in its presence?" — Guillermo Del Toro

You know - a stable tripod and a remote trigger is such a glorious concept! Since this was a test I didn't even onion skin this, I just pushed things around to see what happened. As per usual my brain checked out too early - animating floor pattern dances is just as headache inducing as dancing them - but with this setup a full dance is actually possible.

#Bales2023FilmChallenge April 12: An only child (no, make that two!) on #NationalOnlyChildDay

An amazing adventure in the unusual!

Young Jill – played by the tragically doomed Lora Lee Michel – grows up on a ranch in an undisclosed African country (aka “Africa”) with her father. One day, two porters pass her house carrying an orphaned baby #gorilla. Smitten, she wants and gets the ape, names it Joe, and raises it until the simian reaches exceptional size. That's when a couple of showman collecting exotic menagerie for a Hollywood nightclub come across the odd couple. After long consideration and desperate for money, Jill decides to take Joe to the States where the two become an overnight cabaret sensation. But like Kong before him, Joe is not made for the concrete jungle.

One decade and a Hays Code later, the people who brought the world King Kong (1933) present Mighty Joe Young (1949): more drama, more spectacle, and superior special effects by Marcel Delgado, Ray #Harryhausen and Willis O'Brien et al. A box-office dud ánd Academy Award for Special Effects winner, Mighty Joe Young is now recognised as an #animation classic. In particular the nightclub scenes (keep your eyes peeled for Phil “The Swedish Angel” Olafsson!) are a wonderful display of the magic of #StopMotion.
