Video game companies laid off more than 11,000 people last year and in 2024 so far, a further 8,100 have been laid off. Yet 2023 was a good year for many games businesses in financial terms. GameSpot's Phil Hornshaw dives into what's going on, and how the industry needs to change.

GameSpotVideo Game Industry Layoffs Are Worse Than Ever. How Did We Get Here?Several factors have come together to make this an incredibly tumultuous time for video game developers, and could have lasting effects on the industry.

Electronic Arts is to cut 5% of its workforce, according to a note to staff from CEO Andrew Wilson. That translates to around 670 of the 13,400-strong workforce. @GIbiz's @BrendanSinclair has more details on the company's restructuring plan, which also includes closing offices and sunsetting certain live games. Wilson said in his note that the company is "moving away from development of future licensed IP that we do not believe will be successful in our changing industry."

GamesIndustry.biz · EA cutting 5% of workforceBy Brendan Sinclair

I just found out that the company I work for is basically out of money and there will likely be some massive job cuts. I'm a contractor so I'll probably be axed first. I'm lucky that I have a good savings account. I'm seriously thinking about going back to consulting and freelancing. I'm sick of relying on poorly run companies controlling my life. I'll just have to see if I can find some affordable health insurance that doesn't suck. #TechLayoffs

Talking about #DEIB efforts in ESG, @venikunche said, “We were making some progress. And then, all of a sudden, it felt like these high-profile CEOs were saying it doesn’t matter. And while some don’t publicly say it, they are absorbing it.”

Sadly, shamefully, #DEI advocacy roles are heavily among the first #TechLayoffs cuts.

Thankfully Veni has created a no-charge, public list of underrepresented talent that have recently been laid off. diversifytech.com/hire

#Twitter #TechLayoffs

Media that continues to put out pieces like this arguing that while Twitter laid off most of its employees, everything is fine even with *revenue itself being down 40% and the valuation being down 55%*, is why *context is important*. Rocket guy has set billions on fire, and yet this article is fawning over how "tech layoffs, while not all the same, are not that big a deal" with the now, vacuous nod to how AI is going to "take ALL the jobs" in the piece 🙄

The #ExploreTab is indeed one of the most toxic #MastodonRegressions that #MastodonDevs have introduced. Also forced javascript. We can see the bots are pumping the #turderatti with instant "#fame".

Interestingly, ninety percent of people complaining about #techLayoffs at the #dotCons were in that joining-window also.

Due to #layoffs and other hardships, many are trying to cut costs.

For mobile, I’ve used #mintmobile with my iphone for nearly 3 years. It’s been GREAT for me.

I only pay one bill one time a year. Never had any coverage issues - they use T-Mobile’s network. They also provide all the features of more pricier carriers.

Check them out. If you use my referral link you + I get credit: fbuy.me/tiIOx Hope this helps. #techlayoffs #techlayoffs2023
