#programming #trigonometry #lisp #ellipses #graphing #commonLisp #gnuplot #mathematics #(loosely speaking) An article that was way too hard to write for what we got. I don't know why it was so complicated. Not enough coffee today? I could have done literally anything else. At least the separately drawn coarse hulls of the ellipses look oddly charming?

Please tell me all the things I have done wrong ;p
At least I noticed and put a bandaid on floats in my gnuplotting.
Used the laser cutter to make a holder for my class set of spirographs — for the lessons I like to do my students need to know how many teeth the gears have. They write a program that produces the same curve using turtle. (with older students we do the trig, which I just call “magic circle functions” for the grade fives)
This will make it all go much smoother!
This is 8 sets packed into one box!

Love Triangle: How Trigonometry Shapes the World by Matt Parker, 2024
Trigonometry is perhaps the most essential concept humans have ever devised. The simple yet versatile triangle allows us to record music, map the world, launch rockets into space, and be slightly less bad at pool. Triangles underpin our day-to-day lives and civilization as we know it.
#tinyCSStip Want to create a triangle with all edges equal in 4 simple #CSS declarations?
Such a triangle also has all vertex angles equal = (sum of angles in a triangle)/3 = 180°/3 = 60°
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sum_of_angles_of_a_triangle
Knowing its edge length a, its height is a·sin(60°).
Aspect ratio of the box
a/(a·sin(60°)) = 1/sin(60°)

Two teenagers have once again proved an ancient math rule.
From Science News: “Some people have the impression that you have to be in academia for years and years before you can actually produce some new mathematics,” says mathematician Álvaro Lozano-Robledo of the University of Connecticut in Storrs.

trigonometry: three gnomes in a trechcoat, measuring things.
Old news with a current news twist:
"Two high school students have proved the #Pythagoreantheorem in a way that one early 20th-century mathematician thought was impossible: using #trigonometry.
Calcea Johnson and Ne’Kiya Jackson, both at St. Mary’s Academy in #NewOrleans, announced their achievement last month at an American Mathematical Society meeting."
The twist:
the #basketball legend #CharlesBarkley gave their school $1M for it

Happy Tau (τ) Day to all of you who believe π is "wrong"!
Unlike π day, where you are limited to eating pie, τ day may be celebrated by eating all the round foods.
Here's some generative art involving τ - both with the main circle and the sin/cos functions used in the pattern.
One of my favorite results to share when teaching trigonometry is that \( \sin{x} + \cos{x} \) is secretly a sine function!
\[\sin{x} + \cos{x} \]
\[ \sqrt2 (\frac{1}{\sqrt2}\sin{x}+\frac{1}{\sqrt2}\cos{x})\]
\[ \sqrt2 (\cos{\frac{\pi}{4}\sin{x}+\sin{\frac{\pi}{4}\cos{x})}}\]
\[ \sqrt2 \sin{(x+\frac{\pi}{4})}\]
The process is completely generalizable to \( A\sin{x} + B\cos{x}\)! More here: https://mrhonner.com/archives/18448

3,700-year-old Babylonian stone tablet gets translated, changes history
They were doing trigonometry 1500 years before the Greeks.
Most historians have credited the Greeks with creating the study of triangles' sides and angles, but this tablet presents indisputable evidence that the Babylonians were using the technique 1,500 years before the Greeks ever were.
Mansfield and his team are, understandably, incredibly proud. What they discovered is that the tablet is actually an ancient trigonometry table.

> I feel like I'm the only person on the Internet who took geometry in high school.
That's 'cos while lots of us took it, we don't hang out together much. (cough)
Oddly, geometry & trigonometry is one of the things I learned in high school that I still use to this day. It comes up in all kinds of software engineering that has no obvious connection to graphs, plots, GIS, or anything like that.
