#til about #AppropriateTechnology

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appropri

This feels like a perfect description of how I aspire to make all my #opensource software nowadays — hbu?

> Appropriate technology is a movement (and its manifestations) encompassing technological choice and application that is small-scale, affordable by locals, labor-intensive, energy-efficient, environmentally sustainable, and locally autonomous. It was originally articulated as intermediate technology by the economist (…)

@risottobias I can understand your point. I often think that when it comes to #ClimateAdaptation there is no one approach and there is no defined final destination. So we can strive for #degrowth but we also can work towards #sustainability and #appropriatetechnology and #solarpunk among other things. Everyone can find something to latch onto that resonates. As long as we are heading to a good place I don't care how they do it. We don't need uniformity otherwise nothing will get done.

#Introduction that I'm never happy with (and will probably keep editing):

#travel (as much as I can afford to), member of #HIHostels & #Saintlo nonprofits. Would love to travel to: Australia, New Zealand and of course visit some of my Fedi friends.

Generally nice to everyone, talks in
#memes, replies in GIFs & needs a job to support my #travel habit.

Prefers cats more than people. Still trying to figure out how to use my brain to make money. It'll come to me any day now...

(I'm not averse to the possibility of meeting Fedi friends, but I've had one bad experience with that already so let's try to avoid what happened there: I'm not meeting anyone in person without getting to know them first for at least 6 months. In that time, I should be able to determine whether or not personalities mesh enough.)

LGBTQIA+ WikiPansexualPansexuality is the sexual attraction toward people regardless of their sex or gender identity. Since gender or sex are not determining factors in who a pansexual person is attracted to, some pansexuals might call themselves gender-blind, therefore rejecting the gender binary. The term "pansexual" is derived from the Greek prefix pan-, meaning "all" or "every". like the term “omnisexual” is from a word with the same meaning Pansexual & Panromantic Awareness Day is internationally celebrated on M

Please read thru this post by Emilio Velis, it brings together so many insights as well as other people/groups' work and their synergies that is really worth the link click-through.

Then it's Pedal Power by James McCullagh which is all about pedal power and making low tech and appropriate tech that runs off pedaling. It goes into a history of pedal power and covers everything from the history of pedal power, to more concrete and modern examples like water pumps, electrical generators, even field plows and my favorite, the pedal-powered trash can washing machine.

Pretty cool demonstration of some #low-tech and #solarpunk ideas of harnessing #appropriatetechnology in a way that benefits people while also having an extremely low impact to the environment.

“The appropriate technology movement is attributed to E.F. Schumacher, a German-British economist … During the 1970s, he became widely known for his heterodox economic ideas that lambasted the mainstream emphasis on profit over human needs. In his best-known, 1973 book, Small is Beautiful: A Study of Economics as if People Mattered”

His book was titled WHAT? 🥰

Must read it. So sad to learn he died the year after I was born.

James MullarkeyIt’s not as hard as you think to be a climate crisis influencerBy James Mullarkey

About 20 years ago I read 'Small Is Beautiful', E. F. Schumacher's 1973 economic manifesto on what he called "intermediate technology". This fits neatly with the "slow and small solutions" principle of #permaculture design. Folks in the movement talk a lot about #AppropriateTechnology, and I've been thinking for a long time about how to apply these concepts to the design of communication technology:
