My elderly friend Elaine's system has been aging poorly lately. It's got 6GB of RAM and a dual-core cpu.

She mainly uses it to keep in touch with family and play open source games like mahjong and solitaire.

She explicitly requested #LinuxMint w/ #cinnamon because #Windows is too complicated (she came from #windowsxp before trying #Windows8 )

NewEgg had a $240 Optiplex 7040 that is a massive upgrade over her old AIO. SSD, 32GB DDR4, Quad Core i5, etc.

Old hardware still has a use.

I've seen some varying opinions around #EndOf10 and #Linux and the inevitable #YearOfLinuxOnTheDesktop meme, and I want to chime in that this is a regular part of the OS lifecycle. Linux users might appear in a slow dribble otherwise, but we grow more rapidly when MS fumbles. I started Linux to get away from #WindowsME, and there were similar moods around #WindowsVista and #Windows8. The event is neither a joke nor a start of Linux supremacy, just a good opportunity.

@cdp1337 Yes, I know #Windows365, it was alsp known as #WindowsAzure and is basically a #ManagedDesktop in the #Azure Cloud with a pay-per-use / pay-per-resource system where one gets basically an #RDP session and pays for the VM at runtime + storage...

  • Personally, I can't do #Windows anymore and I get paid way more maintaining #Linux too, so that's that.

The whole #FixUbuntu saga is well known to me, it's still better than #Windows8 back in 2014...

@katnjiapus it's because of what I call "#RedBlueIndex" (named after the holding company owning the two biggest electronics tetailers in #Germany, #Saturn & #MediaMarkt):

  • Only what people see ib stores exists to them!

Thus they see #Apple devices that are more expensive than ever before and are less compatible than anything since the switch from #PowerPC to #ix86 and all the garbage prebuilds with #WinShit on them because retailers get paid to not offer #Linux and the big OEMs get paid $25 for every #preinstall if #Windows10 & #Windows11...

Same with #refurbishers that pay less than €10 per key in return for not shipping Linux...

That's why you don't see Linux machines in stores.

And I want @kartellamt@social.bund.de / @Bundesregierung & @EU_Commission to actually investigate that sooner than later...

It's just crazy for me how obsessed Zuckerberg has become.

Many companies have obsessed about technologies in the past.

#Microsoft was obsessed with touchscreen-friendly #UIs when #Windows8 came out as well as the #WindowsMobile operating system. They were able to realise that people didn't like it, so they moved on. Where #Nokia got obsessed with the #WindowsMobile idea and never moved to #Android, resulting in their death.

#Blackberry was the first company to release a "smartphone" at that time. They knew people wanted to email and communicate more efficiently on their phones, and phones were no longer just for calling. So they released the full qwerty-keyboard. But they got stuck with it and didn't realise the strengths and flexibility of touchscreen-keyboards and the screen real estate that you lose with hardware keyboards. So their phones died out.

So, since I think I've finally had it with all the #streamingservices BS, I made a #Plex server on my #Ubuntu partition that already hosts a #pihole server. I used to run Plex off of the #Windows8 partition years ago on the same desktop and wanted to get our old media files off of it to the new one on the Ubuntu partition.

Setting up the Plex server on Ubuntu was very easy and fast since I already have #SSH setup to remote to my Ubuntu system since the host is shoved into a corner and I only access it remotely from the same home network. Trying to get #RDP going from my #Windows10 laptop wouldn't work for some reason, even though RDP was enabled on the Windows 8 system.

So I gave up and just pulled out the computer and worked on it locally. I tried several methods to find the files. Again, the Plex server on Windows 8 was several years past its last use, so I couldn't remember where I kept the files, what type they were, or even what the proper name for them should be.

@polarisu helped me remember the files mostly were .mp4s, but even that last search was fruitless. Nothing under the default or any of the subfolders for Plex either. I finally asked,

"Did we delete these files?"

"Yeah, I think we did. It should be on my external drive. I put it in a bin in the basement, though."

"Oh."

I just had #neckfusion #surgery about a week ago for a #herniateddisc on my C5-C6 and can't lift anything over 5 lbs yet.

So yeah, that's going to have to wait.
