> Julia Davies, of Patriotic Millionaires:

>> JULIA: Why do we look up to them? Why do we give them honorary titles when they say, "If you make me contribute a bit more to Britain, to making Britain thrive, I'm going to leave."

>> The first thing you do is take their honorary title off them. Because they clearly don't care about Britain. They don't care about their fellow British people if that's what they're willing to do.

@tante@tante.cc @tante@tldr.nettime.org I steadily suggest to apply Mancur Olson's theory of collective action and public goods to get a grip about the #foss phenomenon. The incentive to give birth to Free Open Source Software, to provide, maintain and improve it, will not proportionally grow with its user base for economic reasons. Moreover, the work to spread it has also to be discussed by means of the new institutional economics. See plinubius.de/tag/olson1992/ #Kollektivgut #publicgood

I've long thought that insurance is not a natural commercial market. If the nation needs people to take risks, then the nation should indemnify them. People living in the riskiest circumstances are often those least able to afford insurance. Anyone harmed by someone who couldn't afford public liability insurance is disadvantaged.

In short, Insurance should be considered part of the public good.

Really excited to be starting to focus more and more of my time into building a better home for #OpenSource #Software, on top of @radicle - a peer-to-peer forge !

#GitHub and #Microsoft (or any $megacorp) cannot be trusted as the sole hosts of any #PublicGood, like #OpenSource.

It's time to take back some of that control, before it's too late.

With #Radicle, you can seed projects, like you seed #torrents - ensuring that they stay available, despite corporate agendas.

As we have observed from the #oligopolistic #BigTech in the past two decades, these unbridled #capitalistic endeavors do not lend themselves to #selfregulation for the #publicgood. Likewise, it will be naive to carry-on hoping that #OpenAI and the other #generativeAI players will #selfregulate. That's the #duty of elected #governments and #public #agencies, and the promulgation of effective #AI #regulations is now #longOverdue!

@ajroach42 thinking specifically about video based media and even more specifically about "the news" it's got to be rooted in the original regulation of broadcast television. Back in the day there was a #publicgood requirement that went with the licensing of the #Big3. But they funded everything with ads that advertisers believe convince people to buy their product instead of another.

That model is probably just the default for every new type of media.

If our Constitution proves impossible to change, then maybe we need to reconsider the whole thing. What can't change is doomed. Inability to adapt ensures failure.

First off, do we need a Constitution at all? New Zealand doesn't have one (they have a Constitution Act - an Act of their own Parliament which has been replaced a couple of times IIRC). The closest England comes to a Constitution is the Magna Carta.

Of course, if Australia is to become a Republic, then we'll need to abolish the current Constitution anyway. The most important thing in my mind is that Australia remain a Commonwealth.

A Commonwealth is a form of Republic, with an emphasis on the public good. Australia is one of only three nations on Earth that is formally a Commonwealth.

"What would you say at Twitter’s funeral? "
Good riddance to bad rubbish!
After being taken over by #Elmo the #QLoon, it was destined to die.
It destroys families, friendships, societies, and democracies by means of its divisive #algorithm.
As @JackDorsey@twitter.com said: #Twitter should never have been a company Private ownership of #SocialMedia is as unnatural an idea as the private ownership of the #townsquare. It's a natural #PublicGood, which makes it an abomination.
