> Samsung’s fridges now recognize family members by voice

Why in the fucking hell do I need a fridge to "pull up your calendar, show off your photos, or activate custom display modes." I need it to do one thing: keep stuff cold. Period. Full stop. I want my fridge and other appliances as dumb as possible. Who are the fuckbagels who fall for this?

Arrival of the new fridge prompted a rearranging of our temporary (evolving) kitchen. Swearing and grinding down of screw heads to hang a shelf back where it used to be.

Swapping the hinged side of the fridge door required an authorized fridge installer, so I authorized myself. Easier than hanging that shelf!

A modern inverter fridge filled with explosive gas (R600a). Funny people worry about our gas cooker.

Left with a mountain of styrofoam.

Fridge/freezer combo unit shopping with EU energy efficiency classes and basic math:

Class A: under 100 kWh/year, €1029 for the cheapest unit, €23 p/a

Class E: up to 243 kWh/year, €262 for same volume, €56 p/a

23 years (current price) energy savings to pay for the difference.

Average fridge lifespans (google top 10): 8-18 years

Better spend the difference on solar panels, I guess.

A blog post about buying a new appliance. I don't do this often. In general I try to repair things instead of buying new. But in this case the old refrigerator (which was in our home when we moved here 17 years ago) was using an absurd amount of electricity. Our consumption will be about 600 kWh a year lower due to replacing an old fridge and an old freezer with a new A-rated appliance.

We're currently looking for a new refrigerator because we're renovating our kitchen. The existing built in fridge has been there for the 16 years that we've lived here, and who knows how long before. It's awful: The internal temperature fluctuates between freezing and 8 C and it guzzles electricity - measurement suggests ~500 kWh per year.

For some reason all new built in fridges still have high energy usage, so we're only looking at free-standing models.

Most fridge/freezer combi models are absurdly large. It's a stretch to reach the top shelf inside.

All the A-rated refrigerators are huge and have apps. Linking appliances to the internet is IMO stupid and in any case white goods ought to last longer than mobile phones.

Some of the B rated models are only just behind the 'A's in energy usage but they usually have apps as well.

Then there's the problem of avoiding boycotted brands (#siemens linked to Israel and Russia, #liebherr and #samsung to Russia, #Beko to Turkey).

I'm now remembering why I put off doing anything in the kitchen for so long...
